WHOLESALE LEATHER

Ostrich leather is an exquisite and very exclusive leather, distinguished by its tell-tale pattern of quill follicles or feather sockets. Soft to the touch, the leather is both flexible and durable, making it an ideal working material for the manufacture of most leather goods and certain luxury leather items.

Its durability adds an extra dimension, making ostrich leather one of the chosen materials for the manufacture of boots, handbags, wallets, belts, clothing and furniture. Leading fashion houses, such as Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Cartier, Prada and many others choose ostrich leather to enhance the elegance of their designs, its beauty and its high class status being highly sought after.

Ostrich leather is one of the toughest, but most pliable skins in the world. Full of natural oils, ostrich leather resists drying, cracking and stiffness. No other leather in the world can compete with the unique quill pattern. This, in itself, makes it one of the most expensive leathers in the world today.

Distinctive and comfortable ostrich leather items show the attributes of establishment, wealth and recognition. Elegant and classic, they have been in fashion for the last fifty years.

Gondwana Marketing (Pty) Ltd offers top quality Ostrich Leather globally. Our leather is of the finest quality available in the world today and is available directly from our farms and processing facility.

Unlike many farms, our birds are not put out to range wild without supplementary feeding. Our flocks are hand-fed nutritionally superior foods to ensure fast, healthy and even growth. They have the freedom to roam very large areas, and the freedom to feed on natural plant materials, as well as their supplementary foods. They are also kept until they are mature. This ensures that the leather has very large, distinct quill follicles and that the skins are generally larger than the norm. Most of our leather falls in the size category of 15.5 sqft – 18 sqft.

We offer 4 grades of Ostrich leather to the international market. These are available in a wide variety of vibrant colours. Our skins are triple dyed, to ensure excellent penetration of the dying chemicals. Although extremely scuff resistant, this ensures that any “scuff marks” that might be obtained during the daily wear and tear of the leather have less chance of showing through the colour.

Grading

Grading depends on the defects found on the “Crown” of the skin. This is the knobbly central area that is most prized. This central crown is divided into quarters for grading (see drawing).

|
|

Grading depends upon the number of quarters in which defects can be found within the central crown area.
Q (1) to Q (4) = Central Crown Area
N = Neck
S (1), S (2) = Upper Belly Flap
S (3), S (4) = Lower Belly Flap
A defect can be a hole, scratch, loose scab, a healed wound or bacterial damage but must be less than 40 mm x 40 mm in size.
Grade I - defects permitted in 1 quarter of the skin only
Grade II - defects in 2 quarters of the skin only
Grade II - defects in 3 quarters of the skin only
Grade IV - defects in 4 quarters of the skin
All grading at Gondwana Marketing (Pty) Ltd is done to National Ostrich Processors of South Africa (NOPSA) standards, of whom we are a member. Please see www.nopsa.org.za.
